Trycka is a simple and affordable plastic trash compactor that includes an active and playful experience.

After having benchmarked the trash compactors available on the market, both manual and automatic ones, we found out that they are expensive and people are not particularly interested in paying so much to reduce the volume of their own garbage. In addition, these manual trash compactors break easily because of their complex mechanisms to compress waste.
For these reasons, we decided to hypothesise Trycka for IKEA, a leader in democratic design and interested in environmental sustainability.

Problem setting
What’s really inside our domestic plastic trash bin?
The biggest part of the whole volume inside the trash bag is occupied by air.
Reducing the volume of plastic waste at home is crucial in order to help companies involved in the collecting and recycling process to save money and improve the whole service.
Ideation
An iterative process of sketching, rough CAD modelling (Rhinoceros and SolidWorks), and physical prototyping allowed Trycka to be developed.

Playful use
It is designed to encourage the user to compress their plastic waste, thanks to:
-
a simple but effective mechanism based on magnets and elastics which creates a clean and playful interactive experience;
-
a small opening which incentivises users to pre-compress their waste.

Easy
It is very simple to assemble:
having only 12 components (stacked one inside the other at purchase), the user can mount the product at home without the need of any tools.
